Art, Art, and More Art

View of Auvers-sur-Oise, Vincent Van Gogh (1890)
After a morning of relaxation, I went to the RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) art museum in downtown Providence.  The museum was amazing! Founded in the 19th century, the museum features a series of rooms each with its own designated time period and theme. My personal favorite was the room filled with a series of landscape paintings by distinguished 19th century artists (including the one directly to the left).  I will admit, there were a couple pieces that I wasn’t able to fully appreciate due to a lack of understanding on my part (i.e. a rock with hair glued to it).

(Before I realized the bench was art)
Unfortunately, we were only able to stay for an hour so I didn't get to see as much of the museum as I would have liked.  Hopefully, I’ll have a chance to go back later this week!  Shortly following the art museum, I (and the rest of the ladies in my cohort) went to the Waterfire Festival.  The festival surrounds a sculpture by Barnaby Evans; the sculpture is a chain of bonfires floating over the span of the 3 rivers that run through downtown Providence.  Luckily, tonight was a full lighting, which means that all eighty fires were lit!  It was a beautiful sight and the ambiance was absolutely incredible (there was a variety of local artists and musicians in attendance). All in all, it was a great way to end my first week at Brown University!

  1. Please tell me that you didn't give the museum your real name and address. We don't want any 'strange' bills showing up where we have to buy a fancy bench.
