Learning a New Part of Myself

The first day of my two weeks at Brown, this morning I got up and was exhausted it was mostly a flight that took me out. This morning I had to go to breakfast with my RA (room assistant) but he dropped me off and left, so I was left to find my cohort because I did not want to eat alone. After that we all went to find our classroom which was not as hard as I thought. Walking in to the classroom I instantly felt welcomed and was very excited. Our first lesson was filled with ice breakers and going over the course expectations. I love the classroom! It is a small group of girls around 25 of them, the girls are very interesting that I am meeting today.
The amazing classroom I get to learn in!

In class we went over the importance of single stories and the bad effects they all have, the seven mains norms people are classified or judged with throughout life. This lead to us discussing who we are based on social identities, this discussion was very interesting and made us think twice as to why we identify that way.  Our class is from 11 AM-3 PM, after that we have a mandatory work-shop from 4-6 PM. The work shop went over the different types of leaders they are based off of a compass perspective. The North is a type of leader that likes to control everything and be in charge of everything, East leader is a dreamer makes promises but is a little hesitant to come through with them, west is a leader focused on planning details and south is team worker but could be pushed over. We did several exercises that put us in different situations where we would have to pick a specific one for different scenarios. Very interesting and makes me think twice about how would I handle those situations. After that we went to the other dining hall across campus just to see where it is, the Verney (V-Dub) is better than the Ratty. They have really good ice cream there! The day has been eventful and I am very excited to keep continuing this experience.

  1. I'm glad to hear you are having a great time! When I read the part about the single stories, it made me think of an amazing Ted Talk on the same subject. Here it is if you want to check it out: http://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story
