Finally in Rhode Island

After six long months, today was the day that we finally left for Brown! My cohort was scheduled to meet up at El Cerrito High School (Go Gauchos!) at a not-so-bright and early 3:00 AM, which in turn meant that I had to summon the courage to get out of bed around 2:00 AM.  Unbeknownst to me, my older brother’s friends were still over from the previous night, so you can imagine my surprise waking up to college students in my living room singing along to a mix of the Frozen soundtrack and Celine Dion!

After that rather confusing start to my day, I left home to go meet my cohort at my high school (and being there so early in the morning brought back freezing memories of the daily 5:45 AM soccer practices...) After a brief delay, we were all packed into a van and were whisked away to SFO, where we checked in and had breakfast. I went to a coffee shop and ordered a medium soy latte and a chocolate crossiant—which I promptly spilled all over my carry-on bag. Once I cleaned myself up, we finally boarded the plane where in between naps, I managed to read about half of the book, Nickle and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Babara Ehrenreich (it’s a rather interesting book about whether or not minimum wage is high enough to match the cost of living and through that the way America perceives its working class.)
The typical airplane picture...
After arriving at Brown, we were given directions and keys to our dorms.  Unfortunately, when I walked up the three flights of stairs (while carrying all my luggage, it ended up being quite the workout…) and set up my room, which was surprisingly large for a dorm. Overall, today was absolutely exhausting, but tomorrow will be the first day of class, and I know I'm speaking for all of us when I say that we just can't wait to get started!

  1. What's with the NEMOW spilling their coffees? Is this a prelude of things to come?

And what's with the teaser about the book you're reading? Do you have any thoughts on the matter that you want to share with us?
